Redwood has been named a “Visionary” in the first-ever Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Fourth-Party Logistics, based on its “Ability to Execute” and “Completeness of Vision.” Redwood attributes its position in this inaugural report to the strength of our turnkey 4PL supply chain optimization services.
Gartner® Magic Quadrants are market research reports that help organizations make informed decisions about vendor partnerships and technology investments. Redwood is honored to be recognized as a Visionary 4PL in Gartner’s first report that focuses on our industry. In the report, Gartner recognizes Redwood as “one of the most digitally led and technologically literate 4PLs,” with 100% of surveyed customers rating our innovation as excellent.
As a modern 4PL, Redwood offers just about every physical logistics capability, from managed transportation and warehousing to freight brokerage. But Redwood also digitally connects and optimizes the end-to-end supply in real time, taking full ownership of big-picture results like profitability, service, and sustainability. Our structure reflects that dual focus: About half of our 1,000+ employees focus on physical logistics management, while the other half have expertise in supply chain technology.
The Growing Need for Fourth-Party Logistics
4PLs help corporate logistics teams apply advanced solutions like AI to agilely and intelligently navigate real-world challenges like rising costs, fluctuating demand, geopolitical instability, and disruptions such as natural disasters. Because 4PLs combine hands-on logistics operations experience with advanced tech expertise, they know exactly how to drive value via digitalization.
As supply chains become more complex, volatile, and vulnerable to disruption, the market for fourth-party logistics is growing quickly. Valued at $200 billion in 2024, 4PL market revenue is expected to grow to $300 billion by 2033.
“There’s more disruption. There’s more fluidity in the design of global networks,” David Gonzalez, Vice President in the Logistics, Customer Fulfillment and Network Design team at Gartner, told FreightWaves in an interview earlier this year.
“Companies are choosing to make products in different locations, which results in a different flow of freight from various different countries, and that increases complexity, but also the flexibility that companies want to retain in the way that they deploy their global supply chain networks. I think those two are the key reasons why we’ve seen an increase in demand for 4PLs,” Gonzalez stated to FreightWaves.
Navigating Supply Chain Complexity: A Case in Point
The customer results Redwood delivers illustrate the power of its holistic 4PL approach to supply chain optimization.
As just one example, Redwood helped ORBIS, a world-class leading manufacturer of reusable plastic and metal packaging products used to sustainably move products in the supply chain, overcome both physical and digital logistics challenges. The company operates 12 plants across the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Europe that produce reusable packaging products—which are then shipped globally to automakers, food and beverage manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, retailers, and other customers. The company sends about 300 shipments daily, 1,500 weekly, and more than 80,000 annually.
Mike Heindselman, Senior Director of Global Logistics at ORBIS, notes that the logistics environment at ORBIS had become too complex to optimize without advanced digital solutions. “Technology improves efficiency, capacity, throughput, and planning accuracy,” he points out. “It applies real-time market intelligence to our logistics processes, removes bias, promotes collaboration, and supports speed and agility.”
A team of experts from Redwood implemented Infios transportation management system (TMS), then used the proprietary RedwoodConnect™ platform to integrate the new TMS with existing systems and data—including an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution, carrier and supplier systems, market intelligence platforms, scheduling tools, and visibility tracking software. The result is what Heindselman likes to call a “logistics technology ecosystem” that spans every logistics process at ORBIS, while also connecting the team to external partners in real time.
Discover the Value of the 4PL Approach
In its 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Fourth-Party Logistics, Gartner wrote, “4PLs can provide end-to-end visibility to help shippers identify problem areas, highlight opportunities and even predict future challenges quicker than in traditional 3PL partnerships. In addition, the 4PL can provide governance, oversight and aggregation of the logistics data moving through disparate systems to improve master data management (MDM) and compliance.”
In keeping with its 4PL approach, Redwood delivers the optimal blend of physical resources, digital solutions, and value-added services for each customer’s business to create a connected, data-driven logistics ecosystem.
